BEHIND THE LOGO

The ULC logo was created to establish an identity. An identity that had been lacking in the past. Before, the University Library of Columbus was practically an outsider to the campus. This was especially true for the Ivy Tech entity. Consistent branding had never been established, and I wanted to change that. Bethany Messersmith, the ULC director at the time, had mutual feelings as well. She gave me the reigns, and together we created something special.

The logo was created to embody each college entity on campus. We also wanted the logo to represent the library as well, but with modernized aesthetics. Keeping it bold, yet retaining a playful feeling. My sketches above show my thought process and progressions.

CREATING STUDENT AWARENESS

The objective of the ULC Newsfeed was to create a consistent stream of media content. The University Library of Columbus serves 3 colleges on 1 campus. Therefore, consistency and awareness generation is crucial to reach such a wide audience.

Through research, I found that prior to the current ULC branding there was a large disconnect from the students. By creating a consistent look and feel to the media content, the ULC has an opportunity to develop more trust and awareness. A navigational map was also added, because many students did not know how to find the library.

The ULC building directory was created to give library patrons a friendlier user experience. The building had been lacking proper signage, and I felt like this needed to change. People don't like to guess where they have to go, nor should they have to. It creates an uncomfortable feeling, which is the exact opposite of what the ULC represents.

The ULC is meant to be an inviting space, allowing all walks of life to feel at home. Truly, a space beyond the classroom. The directory is simple, yet effective with color coordinated spaces and simple shapes.

THE BRANDING AND STYLE GUIDE

To create and ensure branding accuracy and consistency, a brand needs a style guide for others to follow. I designed the ULC Style Guide with future graphic designers and interns in mind. I wanted to provide an easy, yet thorough set of standards for one to follow.

I wanted the guide to be elegant and have its own unique, design elements that would provide inspiration and awe. Each detail was meticulously thought out, along with the information that was to be provided. I wanted to ensure every aspect was clear and concise for ease of use.
